It's a sad day for Mother Earth when we live in a society where it's not atypical to find tons of trash scattered along the side of the road.
Despite the numerous cleanup crews that patrol our highways, it seems like for every piece of trash that is collected, there are five more about to be discarded. Thankfully, one Kentucky woman took notice of the junk on the side of the road, proving that one man's trash is another (wo)man's treasure.
While driving to work, Malissa Lewis noticed a trash bag moving on the side of a quiet road.
Unsure if the bag was moving because of wind or something more, she decided to pull over and investigate.
What she discovered in the bag was absolutely heartbreaking.
Lewis couldn't believe that someone would be so cruel as to leave a puppy tied up in a garbage bag for dead on the side of the road.
The dog was wearing a collar without any dog tags.
Upon discovering him, Lewis quickly called her son to pick up the pup and take him home to relax after going through such an ordeal.
Not long after, Lewis took the dog to her local animal hospital where he got a full checkup and all the proper shots. Finally, he was cleared to go to his new forever home.
Lewis and her family decided to name the dog Hefty, after the bag she found him in.
They, along with police, are actively searching for Hefty's owner and the ones responsible for abandoning the poor dog. It is unclear if owner and abandoner are one in the same.
Hefty certainly has a guardian angel watching out for him. If it weren't for Lewis, this dog might not have gotten a second chance at a long and happy life.
