In a post that went viral over Memorial Day weekend, a woman recounted how she and her two friends saw a man put something in his female friend’s drink at a restaurant in Santa Monica, Calif. They followed the would-be victim to the bathroom and warned her about what happened. The shocked woman then sat through the whole dinner until the police came and arrested the man. More upsetting details came out, such as the fact that the woman considered this man a close friend. We also learned that she had parked her car at his apartment, lending even more credence to the accusation that he planned on date-raping her.

Now the suspect’s name and bail terms have been released, and it looks like the Santa Monica Police Department is trying to make an example out of him.

According to ABC 7, Michael Hsu, the suspect, is being held at the Santa Monica Police Department’s jail on $1 million bail. He’s been there since his arrest on Thursday, which makes sense given how high his bail is set. After arresting him, the police collected multiple vials from him with an unknown substance inside, and they also took out a search warrant on his residence, but didn’t disclose if they found anything. Detectives were also looking for more witnesses and victims to come forward; their contact information is at the ABC 7 link.

There are undoubtedly some very upsetting details about this situation, such as the notion that a friend would do this to another friend. What went right, however, is that these women spoke up on behalf of the woman who was almost sexually assaulted, and that the restaurant also backed them up, with the staff checking on her throughout the meal and stalling the suspect while they waited for the police to arrive. It shows how much good can happen when people actually support someone who could be potentially in danger, and it’s not for nothing that others thanked the women for speaking up, saying that they know someone who has shared that awful experience. Hopefully, this will inspire others similarly, since the Facebook post — which you can ready below — was shared 110,000 times.
