There have been rumors of a sequel to the classic 1985 adventure film The Goonies for ages.

Thirty years down the line, those rumors are still swirling, with original film star Sean Astin bringing up the possibility of a sequel this past weekend at Phoenix ComiCon. Astin was quoted as saying on a panel that, “In the original Goonies, it’s not the only time that [his character] would come face to face with One-Eyed Willie.”

One-Eyed Willie, the pirate whose treasure the film’s ragtag group of kids are searching for, has one of the most memorable scenes of the entire film – or at least, what’s left of him does. Astin’s Mikey, the closest thing the film has to a central protagonist, comes across Willie’s skeleton (because what’s a pirate-centric movie without a good skeleton?) towards the film’s climax. Astin’s implication seems to be that it won’t be the only time the two meet in the film’s sequel, and if he knows that, it’s safe to assume that there’s been some significant progress on the script, or at least the story.

It’s a bit odd to think about a sequel to this film happening 30 years after the fact, especially considering that so much of the original was fueled by the youth of the protagonists. That said, the original creative team made something magic with that first film, and if they can recapture that magic, even this far down the line, they’ll have something special on their hands. And with Steven Spielberg apparently having written a story for the sequel, it seems like that magic just might be there.
