Don’t Expect More Than Two Seasons Of Danny McBride’s New HBO Series ‘Vice Principals’

It looks like the new HBO comedy Vice Principals is equipped with an expiration date even before the premiere of its first episode. The pay cable’s latest offering from Eastbound & Down co-creators Danny McBride and Jody Hill has been crafted to last for 18 episodes. Only 18 episodes.

The whole series is only 18 episodes and that’s it, said McBride at the show’s premiere. We just wanted to make a really long movie. It’s one school year and a complete story. This was an old screenplay that Jody [Hill] and I wrote back in 2006. But we needed it to be longer so we added and reworked it and broke it up into 18 segments.

Unlike the U.K. where 18 episodes means like six seasons, Vice Principals will only see a couple of seasons on HBO. That’s in sync with the original order given for the show by Home Box Office, so it shouldn’t be too big of a shock. When pressed if the comedy could stretch out for more episodes if it’s a hit with audiences, Jody Hill was direct in shooting down thoughts of a continuation.

No, stated Hill. We already shot the 18 episodes and that’s it.

This also presumably means that Walton Goggins won’t be hearing any more advice from Bill Murray in the near future. Vice Principals is set to premiere on HBO on July 17.
