The Warcraft universe is important to millions of people. Beyond just the best-selling strategy games, the World of Warcraft has been home to many elves and orcs for over a decade and a real attachment for the rolling hills of Azeroth and deserts of Durotar have been developed amongst fans. That’s why it’s so heartbreaking that director Duncan Jones is taking some major flack from critics for the Warcraft movie adaptation. They say it’s too dull, too esoteric and nothing near the quality of his previous efforts in Moon and Source Code. Despite the critical panning, he did have one major voice backing him up, the most important voice — his dad, David Bowie.

“I showed him an early cut of this and showed him some of the effects shots. You know, for everyone else he was one person. For me, he was my dad. And he was always interested in things I was working on. So I showed him what I was working on, and he was all excited for me and happy that I was doing the thing that I enjoyed doing in my life.”

Warcraft debuts in the North America market on June 10th, but has already had a strong debut in 20 international markets (finishing in first in 19 of them). The big-budget flick made over $31 million in just 5 days in those markets, so maybe David Bowie being excited about Warcraft is just another example of the Starman being well ahead of the zeitgeist. David Bowie didn’t like things that weren’t cool, okay? We all know this.
