If you wanted the old Hov, you sure as sh*t got him on Pusha T’s nostalgia-driven “Drug Dealers Anonymous.” There was almost cause for concern that Jay may have lost it after mailing in a couple of his last features, most recently his blip on Drake’s “Pop Style” and guest spot on Fat Joe’s remix of “All The Way Up.” But it seems like ya boy Hov just wasn’t inspired enough to get in the booth and channel his old self until the G.O.O.D Music president came along with “Drug Dealers Anonymous.”

The youngest Thornton brother described to Genius how a simple email pushed Jay out of his supposed slump. Speaking to Rob Markman, Pusha said after recording his verse, he knew immediately he wanted to get Jay on “Dealers,” a thought co-signed by Kanye. “I played him ‘Drug Dealers Anonymous’ and I said, ‘I want Hov on this.’ He was like, ‘Oh man. That would be fire.’”

Rather than sending out a carrier pigeon — like how I ridiculously thought one contacted Jay Z — Pusha revealed he sent the black Bill Gates a simple email with the song, telling him how Tomi Lahren’s drug dealer comments inspired the track. “Here’s my verse. I left some extra beat for you. Let me know what you think either way.”

The song moved Jay enough to reply with, “WTF? Why you taking me to a dark place? Now I’m going to grow my hair out to be on this track with you…” And from there, it was basically Jay resisting the urge to take it back to the dude with the ’89 Benz and thankfully failing.

Man, there’s nothing wrong with telling ghost stories. We need them. We love them. We love these things.

After a break in the communication, during which Jay likely began crafting his verse, he hit Pusha back.

Oh this is going to be bad. Oh this is going to be real, real bad. I’ll just blame it all on you.

Ok, that’s fine.

Jay takes the night to finish his verse and responds the next morning.
